The Oldest Makeup School in the World Celebrates 50 Years world's oldest makeup school

We are 50 years old this year! This makes us the oldest professional makeup school in the world. Established in 1966, we are celebrating 50 amazing, talented, and creative years of makeup artistry.

EI is the World’s Oldest Makeup School for Good Reason

Most makeup schools have been in business less than 10 years and usually belong to a chain of schools. While having multiple locations allows them to teach more students, it also allows them to make more money. EI is a single, solitary school located in the heart of Hollywood, California. We have remained in Hollywood for 50 years and have no plans to relocate. To ensure the highest standards in curriculum and efficiency, a single location is necessary. We credit a portion of our longevity to the fact that we focus all of our efforts on one school, one faculty, one student body and one goal – to provide the world with the best of the best.

Anyone interested in attending our makeup school should call to schedule a private tour. Those who wish to experience what we have to offer are welcome to spend a day as an auditor.

The amazing world of Monster Makeup can really make your head spin while you waffle between amazement and horror. “How did they do that?!” is undoubtedly the number one question that everyone has when they come across special effects makeup creations. The second most popular question is usually “Where do you get your inspiration from?” and the answer can vary greatly.

Everyone gets their inspiration from a different place or places. It could come from a single place or a million places. The key is to look at things differently, to break them down into sections, and to examine these sections. Think about the personality of the character that you’re trying to create. Are they Angry? Happy? Vengeful? Evil? Complicated? Naive? Where does this character come from? Somewhere Hot? Cold? Wet? Dry? Bright? Dark? Colorful? Dreary? Asking yourself a few questions about your character can really help you put together the entire creation.

Monster Makeup

Here are a few ideas that may help you to find inspiration for monster makeup creations or just creatures in general.

Childhood Nightmares

This is a great place to look for inspiration when in need of a creative boost. What scared you as a child will most likely scare others too. Grown-up nightmares (if you have them) just aren’t the same kind of scary. Usually adults have nightmares about jobs, finances, children, aging, sex, and love. So, use scary stuff from when you were a kid, and not a giant “Past Due” bill… although…

Favorite Movies

Many people become interested in Special Effects makeup because of a character they saw in a movie. In many ways it gives them inspiration just knowing that someone used their creativity and imagination to make it come to life. Movies will always serve to inspire and tell others that it’s possible to make dreams come true.

Animals

Take a look at animals, both at the top of the food chain and at the bottom. They can provide you with amazing inspiration if you take the time to examine how they get on in the world. Each has its own unique characteristics that serve to help them survive, thrive and reproduce. You don’t have to just copy a ferocious animal to create a monster, you can use animals that aren’t dangerous and give them a few tweaks.

Humans

Just living in the world with others might be enough to conjure up visions of monsters. Take a look at human nature and how we react to situations and each other. Admirable humans have just as much to offer as those who are despised by most. Both good and bad traits can be exaggerated or reduced to help create something mesmerizing.

Plants

Everyone always seems to forget about plants. They are much more interesting than you think if you do a bit of research. Think Little Shop of Horrors and the mutated Venus Fly Trap that feeds on the blood of humans instead of insects. Then there’s The Children of the Corn, although the corn isn’t a true character it still takes on a life of its own.

Special Effects Makeup

Monster Makeup inspiration can come from virtually anywhere; whether it’s a tangible object or not. Use your creativity to see things differently. Change the parts of the whole either in size, shape, color or into a combination of variations. Use your fears and hopes in your work to infuse personality into your creation. Break the boundaries and run free. You are only limited by yourself.

Happy Monstering!!!
